Propagating 'Preservation of the National Spirit through Culture' Across Regions and into the Future
Kansong Art Museum Daegu debuts in Daegu, the epicenter of the National Debt Compensation Movement (1907–1908) and a crucible of Korean contemporary art. As the sole permanent exhibition venue of the Kansong Art and Culture Foundation, it showcases cultural heritage preserved through the vision of "preserving the national spirit through culture." The institution commits to systematically researching and preserving artifacts from the Daegu and Gyeongsang-do regions, unearthing new cultural treasures to promote Korean culture's value and excellence. Kansong Art Museum Daegu endeavors to collaborate with younger generations in crafting a contemporary narrative about Korean culture, traditions, and identity that transcends regional and generational boundaries.
Architecture
Chun Hyungpil's (pen name Kansong) cultural preservation vision, which salvaged crucial Korean cultural heritage during national adversity, inspired the museum's design. Architect Choi Moongyu erected wooden pillars at the entrance and strategically planted pine trees, symbolizing the indomitable spirit that overcame historical tragedy and Kansong's noble commitment to cultural preservation.
Kansong Art Museum Daegu aspires to be the "most distinctively Korean museum" and "a museum integrated into nature." Recognizing the site's topographical similarity to Dosan Seowon, the architect incorporated stepwise platforms and area segmentation, hallmarks of traditional Korean architecture. Choi ingeniously connected the interior and exterior spaces, creating a flexible environment in harmony with nature. The museum strives to embody an organic space constructed from local materials, encapsulating Korean cultural heritage and its inherent spirit.
