Chronology of Kansong’s Life & Achievements

Jul. 29, 1906

  • Born as the second son to Chun Yeonggi, advisor in the Privy Council, and his wife from the Milyang Pak clan. Lived at Jongno 4ga No. 112, Jongno-gu, Seoul. Clan seat: Jeongseon.

Mar. 1921

  • Graduated from Eoidong Public Common School

Mar. 1926

  • Graduated from Whimun High Common School

Mar. 1930

  • Graduated from Waseda University in Japan, majoring in Law. Returned to Korea and associated with Oh Sechang. Began collecting Korean cultural artifacts.

1932

  • Supported Hannamseorim Bookstore in Gwanhun-dong

1934

  • Established Bukdanjang in Seongbuk-dong.Interacted with leading calligraphers, painters and writers.

1938

  • Established Bohwagak as a private museum near Bukdanjang.

Mar. 1940

  • Expanded Hannamseorim Bookstore

Jun. 1940

  • Established Dongseong School Foundation, served as director.

Sept. 1945

  • Served as principal of Posung Middle School

Sept. 1946

  • Resigned his position as Posung Middle School principal

1947

  • Served on the Historic Sites Preservation Committee

1954

  • Served on two subcommittees in the Cultural Properties Committee

Jan. 1956

  • Received a government citation for his contributions to education

Aug. 1960

  • Launched an art & archeology association

Jan. 26, 1962

  • Deceased

Aug. 15, 1962

  • Posthumously awarded Medal of Cultural Merit

Nov. 13, 1964

  • Posthumously awarded the Gukmin Order of Cultural Merit

Apr. 1966

  • Established the Center for the Study of Korean Arts
