Treasures of the Kansong Art Museum Daegu
To celebrate the opening of the Kansong Art Museum Daegu, forty items (in 97 pieces) designated as Korean national treasures are brought together. A stone pagoda and a stupa that could not be transported to the museum have been recreated in digital media. All of them are notable artworks and other forms of cultural heritage collected by Chun Hyungpil (widely known by his sobriquet Kansong) based on his profound passion and substantial wealth. The exhibition is entitled Yeosedongbo in Korean, meaning “may precious cultural heritage be shared and cherished by all generations to come.” Inspired by an expression inscribed by Oh Sechang (1864~1953) on the cornerstone of Bohwagak (now the Kansong Art Museum), the title expresses the aim of cherishing the noble intentions of Kansong together with the public.

This exhibition emphasizes the significance of each individual piece as a treasure. To this end, the exhibition has been organized into four galleries, each with a distinct atmosphere. The flow of the exhibition begins with paintings collected relatively early by Kansong. At its center, three books displaying Joseon-era scholarship and culture are presented like monuments. The next space features a feast of ink based on calligraphy, followed by a range of ceramic pieces each boasting a unique beauty. The exhibition concludes with Buddhist art exuding sublimity. It also includes special spaces dedicated to an iconic Korean cultural heritage and an artwork beloved by the Korean people. The Haerye edition of Hunminjeongeum (The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People Manuscript

with Explanations and Examples) is presented along with a media work by a contemporary artist while the painting Portrait of a Beauty by Shin Yunbok welcomes visitors in an intimate setting.

With this exhibition, the Kansong Art Museum Daegu embarks on a journey to share the treasures collected by Kansong not only with the citizens of Daegu, but with the entire nation.
